Is alkalinity the same as pH?
Not quite.
While pH tells us how acidic or alkaline water is at a specific moment, alkalinity measures the water's ability to resist changes in pH.
Think of alkalinity as water's natural buffering system. It helps keep water chemically stable, supports effective treatment processes and contributes to consistent water quality throughout the distribution system.
In our latest Water Quality Insights article, we explain:
• What alkalinity actually measures.
• Why alkalinity and pH are not the same.
• How bicarbonate and carbonate help stabilise water.
• Why alkalinity is routinely monitored in water quality testing.

What makes Vibrio different from other water bacteria?
Not all bacteria found in water indicate pollution.
Some, like Vibrio, occur naturally in coastal waters and estuaries, but under the right conditions, certain species can pose serious health risks.
In our latest Water Quality Insights article, we explain:
• Where Vibrio naturally occurs.
• Why only some species are harmful.
• How environmental conditions influence growth.
• Why monitoring matters for public health and water safety.

Ryzir is our delightful Chief Welcoming Officer at Test It LAB. As the first to greet visitors, he ensures a warm and friendly welcome to everyone who enters our doors.
In addition to his greeting duties, Ryzir enjoys playing fetch with his tennis ball or any of his many toys, all of which he knows by name. His joyful presence adds a special touch to our lab, making it a pleasant place for both staff and visitors.

What does pH really tell you about your water?
Most people know that a low pH means acidic water and a high pH means alkaline water.
The fact is that pH only tells you the condition of the water at the moment it was tested.
It doesn't tell you how stable that pH is or how the water may behave if conditions change. That's why water professionals always interpret pH together with other important parameters such as alkalinity, hardness and conductivity.
In our latest LinkedIn article, we explain:
• What pH actually measures.
• Why pH and alkalinity are not the same thing.
• Why different water sources naturally have different pH values.
• Why pH should always be interpreted in context.
Understanding pH is another step towards understanding the chemistry behind your water quality report.

What makes water "hard"?
Many people assume hard water means poor-quality water.
Not quite.
Hard water simply contains higher concentrations of calcium and magnesium, two naturally occurring minerals that dissolve into water as it moves through soil and rock.
These minerals are not usually a health concern, but they can have a significant impact on plumbing, household appliances and industrial equipment.
If you've ever noticed white scale deposits inside a kettle or geyser, you've already seen the effects of hard water.
In our latest LinkedIn article, we explain:
• What water hardness actually measures.
• Where calcium and magnesium come from.
• Why hard water causes scale buildup.
• Why soft water isn't always the better option.
Understanding water hardness is another step towards understanding the chemistry behind your water quality report.

Creating the environment where great science can thrive.
Meet Elsabé Botes, General Manager at Test It LAB.
Since day one, Elsabé has been part of building more than a laboratory. While many people imagine her working behind laboratory equipment, much of her role focuses on developing the systems, strategies and culture that enable the team to deliver accurate, reliable scientific results every day.
Her fascination with science began with a simple question: How do things work? That same curiosity continues to shape the way she leads today, not only by solving problems, but by creating an environment where people can learn, grow and do their best work.
When asked which laboratory instrument best describes her, she chose an incubator.
"I feel like my function at Test It LAB is to create an environment where the rest of the personnel can be the best version of themselves."
For Elsabé, great science isn't only about equipment or technology. It's built on strong relationships, mutual respect, a little humour, and a team that grows together—because behind every trusted laboratory result is a group of people empowered to do their very best.
