Metrorail Gauteng
Dear Commuters The rolling stock fleet of 406 train sets comprises coaches which were built between 1958 and 1985.
Metrorail is responsible for transporting over 2.2 million passengers in the following operational areas: Gauteng, Cape Town, Durban and Eastern Cape at 317 stations of the 468 stations that Metrorail operates in, the remainder belongs to Transnet Freight Rail. Fewer than 3 percent of the fleet are coaches that were bought in the mid-eighties with relatively newer technology. Diesel locomotives are leased to assist with yard operations and provide the traction supply for the Eastern Cape services. Established as a fully fledged business unit of Transnet in 1996, Metrorail has focused on the delivery of commuter rail services in six major metropolitan areas, while assuming responsibility for the maintenance of the operational asset base.

95 VUT Civil Engineering Students Get a First-Hand Look at PRASA!
On 29 September 2026, Gauteng Metrorail welcomed 95 second-year Civil Engineering students from Vaal University of Technology (VUT) for an exciting and informative visit to learn more about how things work behind the scenes at PRASA.
The students had the opportunity to engage with our Permanent Way Civil Engineers, who shared insights into their day-to-day work and gave the students a better understanding of the important role civil engineering plays in maintaining and supporting our railway infrastructure.
The learning experience continued at the Braamfontein Rolling Stock Department, where the students got a closer look at how our new trains are maintained and the work that goes into keeping our rolling stock in operation.
The students also had the opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with managers and leaders from various areas of PRASA, including Marketing, Permanent Way, Risk, Training and Development, the South Corridor, and Rolling Stock.
From technical work and railway infrastructure to training, risk management and customer engagement, the visit gave the students a broader view of the many different disciplines that come together to keep the railway moving.
And, of course, it wasn't all work! The day was filled with learning, questions, interaction and plenty of fun.
We are proud to open our doors to young people who are preparing for careers in engineering and the broader transport sector. Experiences like these help bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace, giving students an opportunity to see their studies applied in a real working environment.
Thank you to the Vaal University of Technology students and lecturers for spending the day with us, and to all the PRASA teams and managers who contributed to making the visit a memorable and valuable experience.
Building knowledge. Inspiring future engineers. Moving South Africa forward.
