Why do you keep choosing people who make you question your worth?
You might tell yourself:
“I know I deserve better.”
“I’m not going to tolerate this again.”
“This time I’ll walk away.”
And yet… somehow, you find yourself in another relationship, friendship, or situation where you feel unimportant, anxious, rejected, or like you have to earn someone’s love.
This doesn’t necessarily mean you have “bad taste” in people.
Sometimes, the deeper issue is what your nervous system, beliefs, and past experiences have taught you to recognise as familiar.
You may have learned to:
→ overgive to feel worthy
→ ignore your own needs to keep the peace
→ confuse inconsistency with excitement
→ accept the bare minimum because it feels better than being alone
→ constantly analyse what someone else is feeling instead of asking what you need
→ believe that if you can just become “good enough,” someone will finally choose you.
And this is where counselling can help.
Not simply by telling you to “love yourself more.”
But by helping you understand where these patterns come from, how they are maintained, and how to begin building a different relationship with yourself.
Because healing isn't just about finding better people.
It's also about becoming someone who can recognise what is healthy, communicate your needs, set boundaries, and walk away from what repeatedly diminishes you.
You don't have to keep repeating a pattern simply because it feels familiar. 🤍
At Power in Health counselling provides a confidential space to explore self-worth, identity, relationships, emotional patterns, boundaries and personal growth.
If you’ve been thinking “I know something needs to change, but I don't know how to change it” — that may be a good place to start.

How to Help Your Nervous System Recover….
Sometimes you don’t need to become better at coping. You need to recover.
Coping helps you manage stress while it is happening. Recovery is different. Recovery intentionally restores what prolonged stress has depleted physically, mentally and emotionally.
Think of recovery through four R’s: Restore, Regulate, Reflect and Reimagine.
RESTORE
Start with the body. Stress consumes energy. Prioritise sleep, proper nutrition, hydration, movement, sunlight and periods of genuine rest. Remember, scrolling through your phone while worrying about tomorrow isn’t necessarily rest. Give your body opportunities where nothing is being demanded from it.
REGULATE
Help your nervous system move out of constant alert. Slow your breathing. Take a walk. Sit somewhere quiet. Pray. Spend time in nature. Reduce unnecessary stimulation. Connect with people who make you feel safe rather than constantly requiring something from you.
Your body needs repeated experiences that communicate: I am safe. I don’t have to be on guard right now.
REFLECT
Don’t simply recover enough to return to exactly what exhausted you.
Ask yourself: What has been draining me? What am I tolerating? Where have I ignored my own needs? What needs to change?
Reflection turns recovery into learning.
REIMAGINE
Finally, look forward.
What would life look like if you weren’t constantly operating in survival mode? What needs to be organised differently? Which boundaries need to change? What do you want to build, enjoy or become?
This is where hope begins to return.
Perhaps the most important shift is understanding that recovery is not a reward you earn once everything on your to-do list is finished.
Recovery is part of what makes you capable of doing life well. It creates the capacity for adaptation, clearer thinking, healthier decisions, creativity and hope.
Don’t only ask yourself, “How can I cope with everything I have to do?”
Ask a better question:
“What does my nervous system need from me today?”

A LITTLE TEMPTATION IS STILL TEMPTATION
Rina, a Weight-Loss Client, once said to me, “But Joyce, surely I’m allowed a little chocolate, a little wine, a little indulgence?”
And I said, “Sometimes the answer isn’t learning how to have a little. It’s learning to walk away.”
God does not ask us to become comfortable around what repeatedly pulls us back into bo***ge. God does not tell us to flirt with tempation and try harder to avoid falling. He says to escape it. Sometimes freedom means removing yourself from the temptation completely.
Leave the chocolate. Walk out of the kitchen. Change the environment. Find different friends. Create a new way of celebrating, relaxing or having fun.
Stop asking, “How close can I get without falling?” Start asking, “What do I need to leave behind to remain free?”
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful… when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13
Declare this Scripture when temptation comes. Get your spirit behind your decision. When your spirit becomes stronger than the desire, your actions begin to follow.
Sometimes God’s “way out” is exactly that:
Walk away.
