The cheapest exterior paint is almost never the cheapest exterior paint.

It is the cheapest tin. What you actually pay is the tin plus the labour, plus the scaffolding or the ladder weekends, plus doing it all again sooner than you wanted to.

If you are painting the outside of the house this spring, here is the one that catches most people out.

Stop by three in the afternoon.

The temperature drops after that and the coating does not cure the way it should. Same reason you should not be painting a wall the sun has been baking all day. Hot surfaces drink paint and dry streaky.

Our new guide from Herman Rabe, Prominent Paints' Technical Training Manager, has the practical rules:

✔ Start on the north-facing walls and work anti-clockwise, so you stay ahead of the sun
✔ Surface temperature should be at least 3 degrees above dew point
✔ A high-pressure washer with a rotating nozzle is the cheapest, best prep you can do
✔ Tap the plaster before you paint. If it sounds hollow, it is friable and paint will not fix it.

Spring is the right window. Getting the timing right within the day matters just as much as getting the month right.

Your roof is the biggest painted surface on your property and the one you never actually look at.

It also takes more sun than any wall, all day, every day. Tiles go chalky and faded, paving picks up algae in the shaded corners, and by the time it bothers you enough to do something, you are looking at a bigger job.

Spring is the sensible window. The surface is dry after winter, the temperature is workable, and the coating has time to cure properly before the real summer heat arrives.
