The BreatheWell integrated lung health service delivery model is improving access to early detection and care by bringing comprehensive lung health screening directly to high-risk communities.

The programme focuses on mining and TB hotspot communities. Through integrated screening, BreatheWell helps to:

1. Identify people with tuberculosis (TB) and link them to timely care.

2. Detect other lung health conditions and connect individuals with appropriate health services.

3. Strengthen integrated healthcare by aligning with existing national guidelines.

Using digital chest X-rays (DCXR) supported by AI-based image interpretation, BreatheWell is helping healthcare workers detect lung conditions earlier, improve referrals, and ensure people receive the care they need.

Together, we're advancing equitable, people-centred lung health services and strengthening the fight against TB and other respiratory diseases.

As part of the collective commitment to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030, equipment was handed over to the Dora Nginza Hospital Complex to strengthen cervical cancer prevention, screening, and care services.

The handover formed part of the Cervical Cancer Stakeholder Meeting in East London, bringing together partners dedicated to accelerating progress towards the 2030 cervical cancer elimination targets.

We are proud to play a pivotal role in supporting the scale-up of HPV self-collection kits, helping to improve access to cervical cancer screening for women, particularly those who face barriers to conventional screening services. By expanding access to self-collection, more women can be screened earlier, leading to timely diagnosis and treatment where needed.

Together with our partners, we remain committed to advancing equitable access to cervical cancer prevention and ensuring no woman is left behind on the journey towards a cancer-free future.

One of those challenges is mental health.

As conversations around Men's Mental Health Awareness Month continue, there is growing concern about the rise in mental health challenges among young men. Many are navigating unemployment, financial pressures, social expectations, uncertainty about the future, and the pressure to appear "strong" even when they are struggling.

Too often, young men suffer in silence.

Let's challenge the stigma around mental health and create spaces where young men feel safe to speak, seek support, and ask for help when they need it.

We believe that building healthier communities starts with recognising the whole person. Through our work supporting health programmes, research, and partnerships, we are committed to advancing health equity and improving wellbeing for all.

Together, we can help ensure that no young person feels they have to face their struggles alone.

We are pleased to share the success of the satellite session on South Africa’s Evolving Innovative Financing Landscape to Fund TB.

Key points highlighted during the discussion included a deeper understanding of innovative financing mechanisms such as impact bonds, and how these tools can be applied to strengthen funding models for TB prevention, treatment, and research.

The discussion also highlighted the role of the South African Medical Research Council in advancing innovative financing solutions that support a more resilient TB response.

And that's a wrap on the 9th South African TB Conference!

Over the past three days, researchers, policymakers, healthcare professionals, community advocates, and partners came together to share knowledge, showcase innovation, and strengthen South Africa's response to TB.

The closing programme also celebrated excellence through the Discovery Best Oral and Best Poster Awards, as well as recognition of the winners of the MRC Amazing Race.

Conference Chair Prof. Mohlopheni Jackson Marakalala and Conference Co-Chair Dr. Nkateko Mkhondo provided a comprehensive overview of the conference, reflecting on the achievements, collaborations, and momentum generated over the three days.

Looking to the future, Dr. Gloria Maimela, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation for Professional Development, acknowledged partners and delegates while introducing the 10th South African TB Conference, set to take place in 2028.

A highlight of the closing ceremony was the keynote address by Deputy President His Excellency Paul Mashatile, who reaffirmed South Africa's commitment to ending TB and strengthening the country's public health response.

As the conference concludes, we extend our sincere gratitude to all delegates, speakers, sponsors, partners, exhibitors, organisers, and volunteers. A special thank you to the South African Medical Research Council team whose dedication, professionalism, and hard work behind the scenes contributed significantly to the success of this conference.

During the conference, Freck Dikgale presented on the performance of Digital Chest X-Ray (DCXR) for TB case finding at Tonga Hospital in the Nkomazi sub-district, highlighting the role of innovative screening technologies in strengthening TB prevention and early detection among close contacts.

In the Poster Session: Advances in Epidemiology and Health Systems, Lundi Ncana shared insights from our work, contributing to important discussions on strengthening health systems and improving the TB response through evidence-based approaches.

These presentations reflect our commitment to generating practical evidence that informs policy, strengthens health systems and improves health outcomes in communities most affected by TB.

Day 2 of the

The Pluslife exhibition, which showcased a near point-of-care TB NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) solution for tuberculosis diagnosis. The technology enables rapid TB testing and results in community and primary healthcare (PHC) settings at a fraction of the cost of conventional laboratory-based testing.

In addition, the platform is designed for ease of use and does not require specialised technical expertise to operate, making it a promising tool for expanding access to timely TB diagnosis.
