We often dismiss severe exhaustion, brain fog, and unusual changes in our bodies as just the results of a busy, demanding lifestyle. For one of our own Ampath team members, Alicia Frank, a chaotic routine wasn't the culprit; it was severely depleted iron levels.

After stopping her contraceptive pill, Alicia experienced heavy periods and extreme fatigue, but she dismissed the symptoms. The most alarming sign? An intense craving to eat soap (a condition known as pica).

It wasn't until the launch of the Patient Blood Management (PBM) programme that she was prompted to get a full blood count done. Thanks to the guidance of an Ampath PBM-certified Haematologist, Alicia was guided to specialist clinical care and iron infusion treatment. Today, her energy is returning, and her cravings have completely disappeared.
