🌍SOIL RESISTIVITY TESTING

Understanding the ground beneath a site is the first step towards effective earthing design.

Soil resistivity testing provides valuable site-specific data that helps us understand soil conditions and supports the design and optimisation of earthing systems.

At The Testing Guys, we use soil resistivity surveys as part of our engineering and testing services to help ensure that earthing designs are based on site conditions.

Test the soil. Understand the site. Design with confidence. 🌍

🌩️ DOWN CONDUCTORS — THE PATH TO EARTH

When lightning strikes a protected structure, safely managing that current is critical.

Down conductors form the connection between the air-termination system and the earth-termination system, providing a controlled path for lightning current to travel safely towards earth.

But simply having a down conductor in place isn't enough.

Its continuity, connections, routing and overall condition are important when assessing the performance of a lightning protection system.

At The Testing Guys, down-conductor testing helps verify that the intended path is continuous and has a suitably low resistance.

🔍 Why test?

• Verify continuity of the lightning protection path
• Identify poor or compromised connections
• Detect issues that may not be visible during a visual inspection
• Confirm the system is performing as intended

A lightning protection system relies on a complete path from air to earth — and every part of that path matters.

🌩️ Don't just look at the conductor. Test the path.

⚡ TESTING FACT FRIDAY ⚡
🌩️ DOWN CONDUCTORS

Did you know?

A lightning protection system doesn't just need to intercept a lightning strike — it needs to provide a safe path for the lightning current to reach earth.

⚡ Down conductors form that important connection between the air-termination system and the earth-termination system.

Their job is to conduct lightning current safely towards earth, where it can be dispersed.
That's why the continuity and condition of down conductors are so important when inspecting and testing a lightning protection system.

🌩️ A lightning protection system is only as effective as the path it provides for the current.

Test the path. Verify the protection.

⚡ MYTH BUSTING MONDAY ⚡
🌩️ "LIGHTNING NEVER STRIKES THE SAME PLACE TWICE."
⚡ Lightning can - and does- strike the same place multiple times.

Tall, exposed structures are particularly likely to be struck repeatedly because they provide a favourable path for lightning to reach the ground.

In fact, some structures can experience multiple lightning strikes over time- and sometimes even during the same storm.

So why does the saying exist?
The idea that lightning doesn't strike twice is simply an old expression meaning that something unlikely won't happen again.

But when it comes to actual lightning...

It absolutely can happen. 🌩️

That's why having an appropriate lightning protection system in place matters, especially for structures that are more exposed to lightning.

⚡ Don't rely on myths when it comes to lightning protection.

🔌EARTHING

Did you know?
Earthing isn't just about achieving a low resistance reading.

🌍 EARTHING MATTERS
A properly designed earthing system provides a safe path for lightning current to dissipate into the ground - helping protect people, equipment and structures.

A well-designed earth-termination system helps to:
🌩️Disperse lightning current into the ground
🔗Equalise potential between down-conductors
🛡️Reduce dangerous potential differences around a structure

For a lightning protection system, a low earthing resistance is generally recommended - where possible, below 10 Ω when measured at low frequency.
But the resistance value isn't the whole story.

The type of earth arrangement, soil conditions, electrode layout and overall system design all play a role in how an earthing system performs.
🌍Good earthing isn't just about a number. It's about how the whole system works together.

Test it. Understand it. Verify it.

⚡️TESTING FACT FRIDAY ⚡

This Friday, we're talking CONTINUITY TESTING🔌

Did you know that simply proving two points are connected doesn't always mean you have a good electrical connection?

A 200mA continuity test provides a more reliable resistance reading and can help identify poor, corroded, or high-resistance connections.

🔍It can be used when testing things like:
- Earth bonding
- Down conductor continuity
- Lightning protection conductors
- Cable continuity
- Protective earth connections

The difference might seem small, but when it comes to electrical safety, a new connection that looks good isn't necessarily a connection that tests good.⚡
Test it. Don't just assume
