Makiwara
Kenwa Mabuni (1889-1952)
Heir to the teachings of Itosu and Higaonna, Kenwa Mabuni preserves the makiwara at the heart of his teaching.
For Mabuni, the makiwara was never meant to become a simple conditioning exercise tool. It represented a teaching tool to unify the fundamental qualities of Sh*to ryu:
- Technical precision
- Body control
- Stability
- Respiration
- Timing
- Development of the kime
This concept explains why the makiwara is still present in many traditional schools of Sh*to-ryu 🥋
