Tech Tuesday - Offset Bores

We often get asked about bigger bores and what does a Offset bore mean, well there you go, hopefully this helps:

Why Offset the Bore?

The Challenge: A standard A-Series block has limits—you can only bore it so much before the cylinder walls become too thin and structurally compromised.

The Solution: Offset boring shifts the cylinders sideways in the block. This removes material from one side (where the piston can't go) while maintaining the critical wall thickness where it matters most. The result is larger bores (bigger pistons, more displacement) within the same block.

Trade-offs: Offset boring requires precision machining and reduces the overall structural symmetry of the block. It's commonly used in high-performance builds like Miglia racing engines where maximum displacement is the goal.

For a 1380cc A-Series: The offset bore is typically paired with a stroker crankshaft (longer stroke) to achieve the full 1380cc displacement—you need both larger bores and a longer stroke to reach that target volume.

NB: Make sure you use an engineering company that has working on A- series motors before… saves you the hassle in the long run
