Today, I joined councillors and our municipal staff in standing together in solidarity against gender-based violence and femicide. I did so not only as the Executive Mayor of George, but as a South African man.
A man who, like so many others, has a mother, a sister, nieces, aunts, cousins and friends who are women. And like many South Africans, I have watched in horror as the atrocities committed against women in our country continue to unfold. What has happened in the Kempton Park area has shocked us. But we cannot simply watch in horror, shake our heads and then carry on with our lives.
We have to do something.
And perhaps the first step is for us, as South African men, to acknowledge that we have a problem. Somewhere along the way, we have allowed behaviour that should never be accepted to become normalised. My heartfelt condolences go to the families and loved ones of the women who have been so violently taken from us.
But we also have to look closer to home.
Here in our own city and region, we have lost women to gender-based violence. We know the names of women whose lives have been taken from them. Women who were daughters, sisters, mothers, partners and friends.
These are not just names or statistics.
They were people. They had families. They had dreams. They mattered.
There must come a time when we stop asking women how they should change their behaviour to stay safe, and start asking ourselves what we are doing about the people who make them unsafe.
We tell women not to walk alone.
We tell them to watch their surroundings.
We tell them what time they should be home.
We tell them what they should wear and where they should go.
But where is the same energy when it comes to confronting the perpetrators?
We have reached a point where women are being told they cannot walk to the post office, cannot get into their own cars, cannot feel safe in their own homes โ and now, apparently, cannot even go for a jog without fearing for their lives.
That cannot be normal.
Women should not have to live smaller lives because men choose to behave violently. And let me be clear: this is not about saying that every man is a perpetrator. There are countless good men in South Africa who respect women, protect their dignity and treat them as equals. But good men cannot simply stand on the sidelines. We have to speak up. We cannot allow perpetrators to define what it means to be a South African man. We have to challenge the jokes, the intimidation, the controlling behaviour and the attitudes that tell men they are entitled to dominate women.
Because masculinity does not mean making someone afraid of you. Strength does not mean intimidation. And being a man does not give you the right to control, hurt or silence another human being. We need to raise men who understand that. We need fathers to teach their sons that respect is not weakness. We need friends to call each other out when behaviour crosses the line. And we need men to stop looking away when they see something that is wrong. If your friend is hurting his partner, say something. If you hear someone talking about women as though they are possessions, challenge it. If you see controlling or abusive behaviour, do not simply laugh it off or walk away.
Your voice could be the difference between someone continuing down that path and someone being forced to confront their behaviour.
Today, I want to make it clear that I stand with our municipal staff, with the women of George, and with every victim and survivor of gender-based violence.
We stand with the families who have lost loved ones.
And we stand with every woman who simply wants to live her life without fear.
But standing in solidarity cannot stop at words.
We have to be part of the solution.
So today, I challenge the men standing with me โ including myself โ to take up our responsibility.
Let us be the men who say no more.
No more looking away.
No more making excuses.
No more normalising toxic behaviour.
No more telling women that they must change their lives because of the actions of violent men.
Not on my watch.
And to the women and girls who are living in fear or find themselves in an unsafe situation: please speak up. Please reach out to someone you trust. You do not have to face it alone.
Your safety matters.
Your life matters.
Your voice matters.
As a country, we have to do better. And as men, we have a responsibility to help make that change happen.
Today, we stood together. We observed a moment of silence for the lives that have been lost, and we reflected on the society we want to create and what each of us can do to help address this crisis.

๐ A home is more than four walls โ it is dignity, security and a place to build a future.
Today, come rain or shine, we had the privilege of handing over 15 new homes in Metro Grounds to families who can now begin a new chapter with greater security and hope.
For each family, this is more than a house. It is a place to call home.
Thank you to everyone who played a role in making today possible. This is what service delivery looks like when we work together.
15 homes. 15 families. 15 new beginnings. ๐ โค๏ธ

Sometimes, the hardest opportunity ๐ญ๐จ ๐ ๐๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐จ๐ง๐.
Thatโs why we brought the EPWP Services Basket directly to the Uniondale community โ connecting residents with employment, skills development, learnerships, apprenticeships, bursaries and enterprise opportunities.
The event also included a community skills audit, helping us understand the skills and potential already within Uniondale.
Because creating opportunities starts with understanding what our communities need.
