"Some places hold you...

And then there are these places that quietly undo you.

This little corner of the Karoo did both.

I arrived carrying the things I have carried for years — some I knew about, some I didn't. The stories. The armour.

The ways I've learned to navigate the world, to protect myself, to keep moving, to keep smiling.

Then, somehow, there we were.

A handful of lost strangers beneath immense skies, lying in the grass, laughing, crying, listening, holding space for one another.

No fixing.

No judgement.

No need to have the right words.

Just the extraordinary intimacy of being witnessed by people who had only just met you.

And these horses...

They seemed to know.

They don't listen to the story we tell about ourselves. They feel what sits underneath it.

The fear.
The tension.
The grief.
The longing.
The truth.

Perhaps that is what made this weekend so profound.

For a little while, none of us had to be anything.

We could simply be there.

Fully human.

Tender and messy and brave and broken and joyful, sometimes all within the same hour.

There was something almost sacred about watching people slowly soften.

Watching shoulders drop.
Watching eyes fill.
Watching laughter return.
Watching strangers become safe.

I came here thinking I needed to learn something.

Instead, I remembered something.

That underneath all the performing, all the protecting, all the versions of ourselves we have created to survive this life...
there is still a very real, very tender person waiting to be met.

And this weekend, I think I finally sat beside her.

The Karoo will stay with me.

These horses will stay with me.

Most of all, I will carry the people who shared this strange, beautiful, soul-opening little piece of life with me.
Some encounters are brief.
And still, they change the shape of you. 🐴🐎🙌🤠🤍

KAROO RANCHING What happened in the Karoo will stay with me; not simply as a memory, but as something I felt, something I remembered, something in me that came alive again.
