Installation can stop cold when a single bracket, plate or fastener is missing. Fabrication drawings, paired with a properly prepared bill of materials, confirm every required component before manufacturing begins — improving procurement and fabrication planning and reducing the time site teams spend waiting on replacement parts.

Good fabrication drawings also tell installation teams how components fit together and in what order. Clear part identification and assembly information let teams prepare before equipment even reaches site — improving pre-assembly planning, lifting preparation, and coordination between engineering, fabrication and field teams. The less decision-making that has to happen on site, the faster and safer the installation.

Fabrication drawings turn an engineering design into the detailed instructions a workshop and installation team actually build from. When they're accurate and properly coordinated, most of the problems that cause site delays get caught on paper, weeks before manufacturing starts — not once a component has already arrived on site and doesn't fit.

Detailed fabrication drawings identify conflicts involving structural steel and existing plant equipment, pipework and its supporting structures, platforms, walkways and access systems, and existing services or buried infrastructure. Resolving these clashes at the design stage is far more efficient than modifying fabricated steel or pipework once it's on site — especially on brownfield work.

The first check on any brownfield project is whether the drawings being used still reflect the plant standing on site today. Structures get modified, pipes rerouted, platforms extended and chutes altered during shutdowns throughout a plant's operating life — so original drawings often no longer match reality, and relying on them risks a clash the moment new equipment is installed.

Where the plant has changed significantly, 3D laser scanning and point-cloud modelling builds a far more reliable as-built picture than re-measuring by hand, and flags clashes before fabrication rather than during installation.

Increasing one machine's capacity doesn't automatically increase the plant's capacity — it can simply move the restriction. A larger crusher can overload the screen; a larger screen can overload the conveyor; more milling capacity can expose limits in classification or dewatering. CSS Engineering models the expansion as a complete process circuit, not a single machine upgrade.

Expanding an existing mining process plant is rarely as simple as installing a larger crusher, adding another screen or increasing conveyor capacity. Every new piece of equipment places additional demands on the plant around it — foundations may need to carry higher loads, electrical demand increases, control systems need extra inputs and outputs, and existing pipework or cable routes can clash with the new layout. Solving one bottleneck can simply expose another further downstream.

Before expanding, engineers should verify actual site conditions, confirm structural and geotechnical foundation capacity, recalculate electrical load against transformer and MCC capacity, audit spare PLC and instrumentation I/O, confirm water balance and compressed-air capacity, re-model process bottlenecks at the new throughput, resolve piping interfaces, and plan maintenance access and shutdown tie-ins — all before fabrication starts.
