Travellers entering or leaving South Africa must now submit an online SARS traveller declaration before crossing the border.
The new mandatory rule came into effect on 1 July 2026 and applies to travel by air, land, sea or rail.
Travellers must provide details such as passport information, travel plans and contact details, while also declaring goods or currency where required.
Cash, goods, currency or financial instruments above R100,000 must also be declared through the Customs traveller management system.
Please note that Public Officers must be South African Taxpayers and must have individual profiles with SARS - There is a very profound reason for SARS taking this position.
SARS takes the view that, since the Public Officer is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the company meets its tax compliance obligations, that individual should also be registered as a taxpayer. The individual is generally expected to be a South African resident and be based in South Africa so that SARS is able to engage with and, where necessary, trace the individual.
In addition, as you are aware, a Public Officer acts as a “representative taxpayer” and may, in certain circumstances, incur liability in relation to the company’s tax obligations.
President Ramaphosa just gave SARS some serious new powers with the stroke of a pen and every South African taxpayer needs to sit up and take notice. If you skip your tax return or drag your feet sending them info, the taxman can now fire off an estimated assessment that makes your debt due right away. They could grab cash from your bank, sn**ch part of your salary, or chase your assets before you prove them wrong. It’s a tough new rule for the 2026 filing season that screams one thing don’t ignore those deadlines or letters from SARS.
But it’s not all stick there are some smart carrots too. You can now ask SARS to pause collections while they review your request to lower that estimate. The law also tightens up penalties for understating your taxes, making it clearer when honest mistakes get a break (think full disclosure and getting solid advice from a registered tax pro). Other handy tweaks include needing to give SARS 10 days’ notice before hitting the High Court and them popping in unannounced for quick compliance checks. Bottom line? Stay organised, file on time, and chat to an expert if things look tricky these changes could save you major headaches down the line.
