MICT SETA is responsible for skills development in the Advertising, Electronic Media & Film, Electronics, Information Technology &Telecommunications sectors
The Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority, known as the [“MICT SETA”], was established in terms of the skills development act of 1998 and is responsible for skills development in the Advertising, Electronic Media and Film, Electronics, Information Technology and Telecommunications sectors and their sub-sectors. These sub-sectors are varied but interconnected and are at the forefront of technology. The products and services provided in the sub-sectors are complementary to one another. There are almost 20,000 employers in the sector of which about half are in the information technology sub-sector. The MICT SETA intends to engage in learning programmes that lead to employment and new venture creation, whilst at the same time engaging in programmes that assist in bridging the digital divide especially in rural areas.

Last week, MICT SETA convened stakeholders in Durban for meaningful dialogue on the future of digital skills and the evolving needs of South Africa's Media and ICT sectors.
The session opened with organisational updates from Acting CEO Ms Bontle Mokoena, who reflected on performance, strategic impact and emphasising the importance of preparing the sector for the demands of the digital economy.
Key discussions included:
✅ Future-Ready Skills and 4IR
Senior Manager Ms. Gugu Sema shared insights on emerging technologies, innovation and the development of 4IR qualifications to support a workforce prepared for the future.
✅Learning and Development
Senior Manager Mr. Ernest Nemugavhini provided updates on key learning and development initiatives shaping the sector.
✅Quality Assurance and Compliance
Senior Manager Ms Natalie Nelson shared updates on strengthening quality assurance across the Media and ICT sectors.
The ETQA team was also available onsite through a real-time query hot desk, supporting stakeholders with queries.

The 2026 MICT SETA Stakeholder Engagement Roadshow Series is coming to Cape Town. With the roadshow already concluded in Durban, we are getting ready to bring the conversation here next.

What a day! 🎉
Yesterday, the SABC officially welcomed its newest cohort of interns for the 2026/27 financial year, 154 young South Africans in total, through our partnership with MICT SETA and various stakeholders.
Over the years, this programme has opened real doors. In 2025/26, 108 interns joined, and 70 went on to secure employment within the SABC. Some of our longest-serving employees today started out exactly where these young people are standing now.
As GE: HR, Rachel Masuku, shared: "Their journeys demonstrate the lasting impact of investing in young talent and providing meaningful career opportunities."

Stronger partnerships. Future-ready skills. Greater opportunities.
Building South Africa's digital skills pipeline takes collaboration. MICT SETA Board Chairperson Ms Emma Mphahlele and Acting CEO Ms Bontle Mokoena, alongside Board Members and Management recently engaged with Zimele Technologies to reaffirm the importance of strategic partnerships in preparing young people for the evolving digital economy.
During the visit, Ms Mphahlele emphasised that meaningful partnerships are essential to building future-ready skills and capabilities, with learners at the centre of collaboration.
The engagement reinforced MICT SETA and Zimele Technologies' shared commitment to strengthening collaboration, creating meaningful pathways for students and ensuring that skills development responds to the changing needs of the digital economy.
Through partnerships such as these, we continue to connect skills development with opportunity and contribute to building a future-ready digital workforce.

From conversations on digital sovereignty, AI and emerging technologies to research, innovation, cybersecurity and future-ready skills, GovTech 2026 brought together the people and partnerships shaping South Africa’s digital future.
For MICT SETA, the three days provided an opportunity to connect skills development with digital transformation, highlighting the human capabilities needed to turn technology and innovation into meaningful outcomes.
From the exhibition floor to the plenary stage, from research and prototypes to conversations with government, industry and other stakeholders, the focus remained on building the skills and capabilities needed for an evolving digital economy.
