๐ŸŽฎ Mbps isn't everything: What is "ping" and why does it matter?

When people talk about their internet connection, the first number they usually look at is Mbps.

But thereโ€™s another number that can be just as important:
Ping (latency).

Ping measures how long it takes for a small packet of data to travel from your device to a destination and back. Itโ€™s measured in milliseconds (ms).
For example:
๐ŸŸข 5โ€“20 ms โ€” Excellent
๐ŸŸข 20โ€“50 ms Very good
๐ŸŸก 50โ€“100 ms Generally fine
๐ŸŸ  100โ€“200 ms Noticeable delay
๐Ÿ”ด 200+ ms You may start feeling the lag

So why can a 100 Mbps connection feel better than a 500 Mbps connection?
Imagine you have:

Connection A
500 Mbps
80 ms ping
Connection B
100 Mbps
15 ms ping
For downloading a large file, Connection A may win.
But for things like online gaming, video calls and remote desktop, Connection B may feel much more responsive because the delay is significantly lower.
And here's something interesting.

More Mbps doesn't automatically mean lower ping.
You can have an extremely fast internet connection and still have high latency if the server you're connecting to is far away or the traffic takes a poor route.
That's why when troubleshooting an internet connection, speed isn't the only thing worth looking at.
Sometimes the question isn't:
"How fast is my internet?"
It's:
"How quickly does my internet respond?"
A good internet connection is about speed, latency, stability and reliability, not just one number. The internet is a lot more complicated than the number on a speed test.

Your Wi-Fi speed VS Your Internet speed

One of the most common misunderstandings when it comes to home internet is this:

"My internet is 500 Mbps, so my phone should get 500 Mbps over Wi-Fi.โ€

Not necessarily.

Your internet connection and your Wi-Fi connection are two different things.

Your fibre connection might be capable of 500 Mbps, but the actual speed you experience on a device can be affected by:

โ€ข How far you are from the router
โ€ข Walls and floors between you and the router
โ€ข 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz vs 6 GHz Wi-Fi
โ€ข How many devices are using the Wi-Fi at the same time
โ€ข Interference from neighbouring Wi-Fi networks
โ€ข The capabilities of your phone, laptop or TV
โ€ข The position of your router
โ€ข The quality of the Wi-Fi hardware in the router

For example, if your router receives 500 Mbps from the internet but your phone only has a weak Wi-Fi connection, your phone might only achieve 100โ€“200 Mbps.

That doesn't necessarily mean there is something wrong with your internet connection.

A simple rule of thumb:

If you want to test your actual internet connection, connect a computer directly to the router with a good Ethernet cable and run your speed test.

If you get close to your subscribed speed over Ethernet but much less over Wi-Fi, the problem is probably Wi-Fi rather than your internet connection.

And sometimes, slower Wi-Fi isn't actually a problem. If your phone is getting 150 Mbps but your internet usage only requires 20 Mbps, you're unlikely to notice any difference.

Technology doesn't always need to run at its maximum speed to work perfectly.
