LCC TARGETS KATONDO STREET IN PHASE TWO OF OPERATION CLEAR PATH
The Lusaka City Council has rolled out Phase Two of Operation Clear Path, targeting illegal street vending, unauthorised bus operations and other unlawful activities in the Central Business District. Lusaka Mayor Chitambala Mwewa said the operation will focus on decongesting the C*D and building on the gains made during Phase One.
Mr. Mwewa said the Council will work with the Road Transport and Safety Agency and the Zambia Police Service to move buses operating from unauthorised locations to designated bus stations. He also announced intensified enforcement on Katondo Street, where businesses have complained about street traders blocking shopfronts and access points.
The Mayor said traders selling mobile phones and other electronic devices, as well as those displaying vehicles for sale on Katondo Street, will be targeted because the area is not designated for such activities. He directed mobile traders selling fruits, vegetables and other goods from wheelbarrows to register and operate from approved trading centres, including Soweto Market, City Market and Simon Mwewa Market.

2027 BUDGET FACES RISING SPENDING PRESSURES
Government is facing increased spending pressures as it prepares the 2027 National Budget, with the expansion in the number of constituencies, salaries, maize arrears and the possible impact of El Niño expected to place additional demands on public finances.
Secretary to the Treasury Felix Nkulukusu has called for prudent use of public resources, saying Government will continue to prioritise economic stability, inclusive growth and the Grow Zambia Agenda. He said the budget hearings will give stakeholders an opportunity to raise challenges and propose solutions as Government balances competing demands.
Permanent Secretary Mwaka Mukubesa said total resources for 2027 are projected to increase by 7.4 percent, largely due to higher domestic revenue. She said resources are expected to reach 333 billion kwacha by 2029, supported by projected economic growth of 6.9 percent and single-digit inflation.
