ZAMBIA TO EXPERIENCE COLD, WINDY CONDITIONS
The Zambia Meteorological Department has warned of strong winds, cool temperatures and moist conditions across the country from August 11, to August 15, 2026.
The Department says a high-pressure system over the Indian Ocean is driving strong, moist and cool airflow across Zambia, with a reduction in temperatures expected in Western, Lusaka, Central, Southern, Eastern and Muchinga Provinces.
Members of the public have been advised to dress warmly, particularly during the night and early morning hours.
The Department has further urged people with respiratory conditions, the elderly and children to limit exposure to dust and take appropriate protective measures.
Parents and guardians have also been encouraged to closely supervise children and keep them away from open fires, braziers and other heating sources to prevent burn injuries during the cold weather.
Meanwhile, users of water transport have been advised to exercise extreme caution when operating on water bodies due to the hazardous windy conditions.
The Zambia Meteorological Department says it will continue monitoring weather patterns and provide updates in collaboration with the Disaster Risk Management Division.

Former Copperbelt Commanding Officer Charged in Copper Theft
Former Copperbelt Province Commanding Officer Yuyi Mwala has been formally charged with Theft by Public Servant in connection with the alleged theft of 436 copper cathodes valued at about USD 448,596.
Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi confirmed that Mr. Mwala is among six suspects arrested following investigations into the consignment, which was recovered in Mokambo area of Mufulira District between March 6 and 9, 2026.
The copper, originally being transported from the Democratic Republic of Congo to South Africa, was allegedly diverted into Zambia. Investigations revealed that after being placed in police custody, the consignment was fraudulently released to a private individual and later auctioned despite the owner having been identified.
Other suspects include police officers Patrick Muti and Boniface Nchimunya, Clerk of Court Obrian Chipunza, Magistrate Edward Banda, and businessman Daniel Makina. They face charges ranging from Theft by Public Servant and Giving False Information to a Public Officer to Receiving Property Suspected to Have Been Stolen.

Cobra Security Begins Paying Former Workers Following Intervention
By Phyllis S.Banda
Former Cobra Security workers in Luanshya have started receiving their outstanding payments following concerns raised over delayed dues after the company's contract with CNMC Luanshya came to an end.
Aspiring Roan Constituency Member of Parliament, Nathan Chanda Bwalya, says Cobra Security has begun settling payments in groups through an ongoing clearance process, despite facing operational challenges after the loss of the contract.
Mr. Bwalya says he engaged the company on behalf of the affected workers and has since received assurances that all former employees will be paid what they are owed.
He has appealed to the workers to remain patient as the payment exercise continues, while urging Cobra Security management to speed up the process to ensure all outstanding dues are cleared without further delay.
Mr. Bwalya says his role is to speak on behalf of workers and to acknowledge progress whenever action is taken.
He has further pledged to continue monitoring the situation until the last affected worker receives payment.

Speaking to Luanshya Reports , Mr. Kabwita said resolving land ownership issues would be one of his administration's top priorities, describing secure land tenure as essential for improving residents' livelihoods and promoting orderly urban development.
In addition, the mayoral hopeful pledged to rehabilitate and maintain parks and gardens across Kitwe in a bid to improve the city's appearance and create a cleaner, healthier environment for residents.

CEC HAILED AS AFRICA's BLUEPRINT FOR ENERGY-LED INDUSTRIALISATION
By Phyllis S. Banda
The Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) has been hailed as a leading example of how African utilities can drive industrialisation and economic growth across the continent.
Speaking at the Africa Energy Forum 2026 under the theme "Building Africa's Industrialised Future," Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary Professor Ephraim Munshifwa said CEC's success demonstrates that transformative energy projects can be financed without sovereign backing.
He cited CEC's use of sovereign-free financing, green bonds and direct offtake agreements as a model for other African nations.
Through its subsidiary CEC Renewables, the company issued Zambia's first-ever Green Bond, raising 150 million US dollars to support the development of 230 megawatts of solar power through the Riverside and Itimpi I and II projects.
CEC Chief Projects Officer Engineer Vincent Nyirenda attributed the achievement to the company's commitment to finding innovative solutions and revealed plans to invest in battery energy storage, regional interconnectors and network expansion.
Professor Munshifwa added that reforms such as open access, net metering and smart metering are yielding results, with CEC playing a key role in demonstrating their effectiveness as Zambia works towards achieving 10 gigawatts of generation capacity by 2030 and increasing copper production to 3 million metric tonnes annually.

ESMAZ Backs Government Crackdown on Illegal Mining, Calls for Easier Licensing
By Phyllis S. Banda
The Emerald and Semi-Precious Stones Mining Association of Zambia (ESMAZ) has supported Government’s position on rescue operations involving illegal miners, saying the focus should be on preventing illegal mining through formalization and safer mining practices.
ESMAZ President Victor Kalesha says the Ministry of Mines’ stance is intended to discourage illegal mining, which deprives the country of tax revenue and exposes both miners and rescue teams to danger.
Mr. Kalesha says while illegal mining continues to claim lives and damage the environment, strict penalties alone will not end the problem.
He notes that many miners resort to illegal activities because licensing procedures remain costly and complicated.
He has urged Government to simplify licensing processes, reduce fees, and make environmental compliance requirements more affordable for artisanal and small-scale miners.
Mr. Kalesha has also called for financial support mechanisms, faster approval processes, and greater involvement of mining associations in sensitization campaigns aimed at promoting safe and legal mining practices.
He says the message from Government is clear: miners should abandon illegal operations and embrace formalized mining to improve safety, protect lives, and increase national revenue.
Early this month, the government said it will no longer use public resources to rescue people trapped while mining illegally.
