Patriotic Front (PF) President Robert Chabinga has refuted claims that some PF Members of Parliament received K3 million each to vote for Amendment Bill Number Seven last Monday.
He instead questioned who was bribed between those who went to vote and those who stayed away.
According to Chabinga, opposition MPs who stayed away from voting did so under the order of party Chief Whip Brian Mundubile.
Speaking Tuesday when he featured on Crown TV, Chabinga, who is also Mafinga lawmaker, said: โWe are closing Parliament. What prompted those people who support Brian Mundubile not to come, to lose a K2,000 allowance? It means they were paid somewhere. My loyal members, because they wanted that allowance, had to come to Parliament.โ
Amendment Bill Number Seven passed the third reading with 135 votes against zero.
The Mafinga MP noted that the unanimous voting was incentivized by deep convictions among Members of Parliament.
โI want to protect and defend strongly my Members of Parliament. No one collected a single ngwee from anybody. They were convinced beyond reasonable doubt that this bill meant well for the people of Zambia. It supports women, youths, and people with disabilities participating in politics. That was the conviction,โhe claimed.
He also warned that he would not allow his members to be victimized for voting for the bill, adding that those accusing the MPs of corruption would be sued for disrepute.
Chabinga attributed the unanimous passage of the bill to the collective efforts and ideologies among the lawmakers.
Further, he expressed openness to embrace party factions for dialogue ahead of the 2026 general elections.
However, he said the dialogue is conditional on the party first burying the sixth president, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who died in June this year and whose body remains in South Africa where he passed away.
โThe soul of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu is not at peace. Thatโs why for some of them [PF Members] things are not working. If they want to come and talk to me, to sit down and negotiate about the PF party, letโs bury President Lungu,โsaid Chabinga.
