Sport In Action

Sport brought healthcare to Kasangala. Over 798 community members turned out, 23 girls were immunised against HPV, and 3 zero-dose children were vaccinated for the very first time. This is what it looks like when no one is left behind.

60 Kilometres from Care: Reaching Zambia's Hardest-to-Reach Communities Through Sport Sport In Action used the Big Catch Up tournament to deliver HPV vaccines and immunisations to over 798 people across 15 hard-to-reach villages in Itezhi Tezhi.

🌍🇿🇲 The Volunteer Zambia 2026 Group One cohort has officially begun its journey!

Today, Volunteer Zambia group 1 was welcomed at the British High Commission ahead of eight weeks of community engagement alongside Sport in Action coaches across Lusaka.

The induction highlighted the power of partnerships in creating opportunities for young people through sport and community development. As our Executive Director, Frankson Mushindu, reminded the cohort, our focus remains on supporting young people and strengthening communities through sport.

We wish all volunteers a rewarding experience as they learn, serve and make lasting connections within our communities.

Sport In Action, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and CHAZ, with support from GAVI, continues to demonstrate the power of sport as a platform for community mobilisation, health education and access to essential immunisation services. Through integrated sports tournaments across Southern and Western Provinces, communities were brought together to learn, engage and access vital health services, reinforcing the role of sport in building healthier and more informed communities.

Earlier today, Sport In Action collaborated with NOWSPAR and Response Network in celebrating Menstrual Hygiene Day with over 95 young girls coming together to learn, share, and feel empowered. The day was filled with various educational activities, including lessons on Self care during periods. Types of foods to eat, mental health, how to use different sanitary towels and what to expect during their initial stages of experiencing periods. Through group activities and fun games, the girls had an opportunity to interact, build confidence, and create a safe and supportive community for one another, creating a period friendly world for everyone. #menstrualhygieneday #girlsinaction #togetherness

UPDATE: WESTERN PROVINCE: SITUNGA & MONGU DISTRICT

Sport In Action (SIA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and with funding support from CHAZ and GAVI, successfully implemented integrated sports tournaments in Western Province as a platform for community engagement and health promotion.

In Situnga, Senanga District, outreach activities reached 720 community members with health sensitisation messages, addressed immunisation gaps by administering missed-dose vaccines to 27 children under 5 and HPV vaccines to 59 girls, and engaged traditional leaders to challenge cultural norms and improve male participation in immunisation through community dialogue.

In Katongo, Mongu District, the tournament helped deliver HPV vaccines to 237 girls, HIV testing to 77 individuals through local partner Mwaroky, and catch-up vaccinations to 6 children, thereby strengthening access to essential health services and promoting community awareness through sport.

Western Province: Mongu.

Following successful Integrated Sports Tournaments in Southern Province, where over 3,300 community members received health sensitisation messages and children accessed vital immunisation services, Sport In Action (SIA), in partnership with the Ministry of Health, local stakeholders, CHAZ and GAVI, now continues the initiative in Western Province where the first of five activation took place yesterday in Senanga District at Silunga Health Facility, using sport as a platform to promote community engagement, routine immunisation, and HPV vaccination.

SOUTHERN PROVINCE RECAP:

Sport In Action (SIA) in partnership with the Ministry of Health and local stakeholders with support from Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) and GAVI successfully conducted Integrated Sports Tournaments in Gwembe and Pemba Districts of the southern province, using sport as a platform for community engagement and health promotion of male involvement in immunisation programmes.

The activities reached 8 community football teams and over 200 direct participants, while a total of 3,386 spectators received health sensitisation messages during the tournaments.

Through the integrated outreach activities, 24 children under the age of Five received missed dose vaccinations and 92 girls were vaccinated against HPV.

The tournaments also received strong support from district health leadership in Pemba, with the District Health Director, Health Promotions Officer, Nursing Officer, and Facility Staff attending to ensure quality provision of services.
