A 7.1 magnitude earthquake has hit Japan's Kumamoto prefecture, with several reported casualties and injuries.

HOT is calling for volunteers to help complete validation of two mapping projects created by Crisis Mappers Japan in response to earlier floods in the prefecture. Your contributions will help strengthen the availability of validated local map data to support disaster response and recovery efforts.

HOT's Sam Colchester (Global Disaster Response Advisor), Rebecca Firth (Executive Director), and Sam Woodcock (Senior Technical Lead) represented HOT at the forum. During the event, Sam Colchester led a hands-on session where volunteers explored how drone imagery supports humanitarian mapping and learned how the HOT Drone Tasking Manager enables coordinated, collaborative drone data collection for faster emergency and disaster response.

🗺 From Local Maps to Global Impact: What we learned from the UN Maps Community Ambassadors Pilot Initiative 🌏🌎🌍

For 12 weeks, four (4) UN Maps Community Ambassadors locally led the mapping and community outreach activities of . 🇰🇪 🇨🇲 🇮🇳 🇦🇷

Through the pilot initiative, we introduced open mapping and grew the community to places it has never been before as well as gained insights on how we can strengthen community-owned open data 🌐💽
