Rejected from final, recruited instead; how one audition changed Cosmas Mulenga’s life

MANY young people leave school with dreams but often struggle to find the right path to follow. For Cosmas Mulenga, a competition he entered out of curiosity became an unexpected doorway to a career he never planned for, transforming him from a school leaver to a young sports journalist.

When Cosmas Mulenga failed to reach the final of the Diamond TV Presenter Search in 2022, he thought his dream of being on television dream ended before it had even begun.

However, the Chief Visionary Officer (CVO) of Diamond TV, Mr Coster Mansa, made an unexpected announcement.

Instead of sending him home empty handed, he offered the then 18-yearold an internship after recognising his determination and potential.

Today, at 22, Cosmas has established himself in the media industry, earning recognition for his work as a sports journalist.

Born in Kasama and raised in Mansa, Luapula Province, Cosmas moved to Lusaka intending to study professional accountancy at the Zambia Centre for Accountancy Studies (ZCAS).

“Journalism was never part of my plan until I came across an advertisement for a television presenter competition.

I was determined and focussed, and I almost a month preparing for the auditions, practising presentation skills for two hours every day,” he shared in an interview.

Although he did not win the competition, the internship offer became the opportunity that changed his life.

“I entered the newsroom without formal journalism training, and had to learn everything from writing news stories to understanding media ethics and the responsibilities of a journalist,” he said.

To perfect the skill, gain academic excellence, he enrolled for a degree in Mass communication and public relations at Cavendish university while continuing to gain first-hand experience from the team at Diamond TV.

He said this period also made him realise that communication and media were his natur

Kasama pupil develops ‘the beetroot bandage’ to detect diabetic wound infections

WHEN Niza Mwambazi lost her grandmother to diabetes, she resolved to develop an innovation that would enable people living with the condition to get treatment early.

She developed ‘the beetroot bandage’, an antibacterial dressing that uses a natural pH indicator extracted from beetroot to detect possible infections in diabetic wounds.

Niza, who is a learner at Laura Girls Secondary School in Kasama, shared that she was inspired to develop the innovation after losing her grandmother as well as witnessing her aunt undergo a leg amputation due to diabetes.

“I wanted to come up with something that could help monitor wounds before they become severe,” she said.

She says that the bandage changes colour depending on the condition of the wound.

“If the wound is alkaline, the bandage turns fungi yellow, indicating a possible infection. If the wound is acidic, it turns bright red, showing that the wound is healing. When the wound is neutral, the bandage remains purple, indicating that it is neither infected nor healing,” she says.

The innovation was further tested on 10 patients at Kasama General Hospital.

The hospital provided a recommendation letter confirming the effectiveness of the project.

She now hopes to attract investment to establish an industry capable of producing the bandages on a larger scale, develop specialised packaging that keeps the bandages sterile for extended periods and establish mobile clinics to serve rural communities.

WHAT HAPPENS IF S***M MEETS THE EGG IN THE LAST MINUTE BEFORE IT DIES?

✅ SHORT TRUTH:
The egg only lives 12 to 24 hours after release. If s***m arrives in those final moments when the egg is weak and almost gone — it can still work, but it is risky and less likely to succeed 🤍

🧩 HOW IT WORKS
🔹 When the egg is fresh and strong: It accepts s***m easily, fertilisation happens smoothly, and the chance of healthy pregnancy is highest.
🔹 When you wait until the very end: The egg is aging, its outer layer becomes harder to pe*****te, and it may already be breaking down.
🔹 If they meet in that last window: Sometimes fertilisation still happens — because the egg is still alive, just weaker. But the chance of success is lower than if you timed it earlier.
🔹 If the egg has already died: It cannot be fertilised at all — nothing will happen, and your period will come as usual.

⚠️ WHAT ARE THE RISKS
🔹 Higher chance the egg cannot attach well to the womb lining
🔹 Slightly higher risk of very early loss — because the egg was already weak
🔹 Most of the time, if it manages to start growing, it develops normally — the egg being old for a few hours does not cause birth defects or problems later.

BEST WAY TO AVOID THIS GUESSWORK
✅ Have s*x 2 days before ovulation, 1 day before, and ovulation day itself — this means fresh strong s***m is waiting for the fresh healthy egg
✅ S***m can live 3–5 days waiting safely — so you never need to rush for the last minute
✅ This gives you the highest chance of healthy conception

🚩 MYTHS TO FORGET
❌ “If they meet late the baby will be sick or disabled” — no, once it implants and grows well, it is healthy
❌ “It will definitely end in miscarriage” — many go on perfectly well, just chances are lower
❌ “The egg dies exactly at 24 hours sharp” — it fades slowly, so that last little while is still possible

💛 FINAL SUMMARY
It is possible but not ideal. Always aim to have s***m waiting for the egg — not chasing it wh
