MPONGWE CENTRAL FARMERS STRUGGLE WITH SINGLE DEPOT - CHAIRPERSON APPEALS TO GOVERNMENT.

Mpongwe District United Party for National Development (UPND) Chairperson, Humphrey Chibundi has appealed to the government to increase the number of depots in Mpongwe Central ward ahead of the 2026-2027 farming season.
Mr. Chibundi says Mpongwe Central has over 15,000 farmers across six zones who are currently being served by only one depot, a situation he describes as a serious challenge.
He said the shortage of depots is making it difficult for farmers to access farming inputs and to deliver their produce during the marketing season.
"The ward has over 15,000 farmers in 6 zones, but we only have one depot. This is a big challenge for our people," Mr. Humphrey said.
He has called on the government to consider allocating more depots to the area for the 2026-2027 harvest season to ease the burden on farmers.

112,640 OUT OF 130,866 PASS GCE
The Ministry of Education has disclosed that 112,640 out of 130,866 candidates who sat for the 2026 General Certificate of Education (GCE) examinations have passed, representing a 92.85 percent pass rate compared to 91.43 percent in 2025.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today, Acting Minister of Education Dr. Gilbert Siame stated that female candidates dominated the candidate pool, accounting for 70.16 percent (91,821) of those who sat, compared to 29.84 percent (39,045) males. He urged more men to sit for the examinations to boost their qualifications for employment and higher education.

PICTORIAL HIGHLIGHTS OF THE HTCT DAY COMMEMORATIONS IN MPONGWE.
Mpongwe Town Council Chairperson, Mr. Chrispin Tembo has called for increased health sensitisation programmes across the district. Mr. Tembo emphasized that awareness campaigns must extend beyond the Central Business District (CBD) to ensure vital health information and services reach community members in the most remote parts of Mpongwe.
MPONGWE ATTAINS 88% UNAIDS TARGET

Mpongwe District in the Copperbelt Province has recorded significant progress in the fight against HIV and AIDS, attaining an 88 percent benchmark toward the UNAIDS 95-95-95 global targets.
Mpongwe Town Council Director of Administration, Dr. Janet Namuchile, revealed that out of 31,475 clients tested for HIV in the district, 927 tested positive, with 895 successfully placed on life-saving antiretroviral therapy (ART).
Dr. Namuchile was speaking during the local commemoration of the HIV Testing, Counselling, and Treatment (HTCT) Day, held under the theme: "One door, many services; integrated health for a sustainable future."
Speaking at the same event, Mpongwe District Health Director Dr. Evaristo Kunka emphasized that healthcare is everyone's responsibility and shouldn't be left for Health workers alone.
Addressing residents, Dr. Namuchile urged community members to overcome fear and embrace routine HIV testing, emphasizing that knowing one's status remains the primary entry point to timely treatment and care.
She stressed the need for early screening to become a normalized practice in daily health routines, while strongly condemning ongoing stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV.
She further called on healthcare workers in the district to uphold high standards of confidentiality, professionalism, and compassion when handling clients to foster public trust in health facilities.
Turning to family dynamics, she encouraged parents to hold honest, age-appropriate conversations with their children to guide them toward making responsible decisions regarding their reproductive health.
Dr. Namuchile commended the administration under President Hakainde Hichilema for its continued commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to quality medical services in rural communities.

ACC ARRESTS EX-EDUCATION PS, PROCUREMENT HEAD OVER US$401 MILLION CONTRACT
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested and charged former Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary Henry Tukombe and former Head of Procurement and Supply Jacob Masatunya for alleged corrupt practices involving over US$401 million in public procurement.
Tukombe, 57, of Plot 411–414 Ibex Meanwood, Chongwe, and Masatunya, 53, of Plot 4712, Lusaka, have been charged with willful failure to comply with applicable public procurement guidelines, contrary to Section 34 (2) (b) as read with Section 41 of the Anti-Corruption Act, Chapter 91 of the Laws of Zambia.
The duo is alleged to have committed the offenses between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2021, in Lusaka District, in the manner they facilitated a contract with Mikalile Trading Company Limited of Hong Kong for the supply and delivery of various school items countrywide.
The contract involved a principal sum of US259,250,400, an additional interest of US138,698,964, and arrangement fees amounting to US3,888,756, committing the Government of the Republic of Zambia to a total loan obligation of US401,838,120.
According to particulars of the first count, Tukombe and Masatunya willfully failed to comply with Regulations 111 and 30 of the Public Procurement Regulations of 2011 by facilitating the procurement without a requisition from the user department in the Ministry.
In the second count, the two officers breached Regulation 114 of the Public Procurement Regulations of 2011 by proceeding with the supply contract without subjecting the bid from Mikalile Trading Company Limited to an evaluation process.
Furthermore, the third count alleges that the duo violated Section 22 of the Public Procurement Act of 2008 by allowing the procurement to proceed without obtaining the mandatory authorization from the Ministerial Procurement Committee.
The suspects have since been released on bond and are expected to appear in court soon to answer to the charges.

PRESS STATEMENT
SUDDEN AND UNNATURAL DEATH – POLICE SERVIC HEADQUARTERS
September 15, 2026 - Zambia Police Service in Lusaka recorded an incident of a sudden and unnatural death which occurred on 14th September 2026, at around 20:45hrs at Police Service Headquarters.
Involved was Mr Daniel Banda, aged 53, Assistant Superintendent, attached to the Ballistics Unit, who shot himself using a pistol.
Brief facts are that Mr. Banda locked himself in his office around 17:00 hrs, in possession of an AK-47 rifle and a pistol, and threatened to take his own life.
Negotiations with him commenced at approximately 17:00 hours and continued until 20:45 hours, but without success. He subsequently discharged the firearm, shooting himself in the head.
The body has since been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Investigations have been instituted into the matter and more details will be availed in due course.

MPONGWE NEW MARKET STALLS TO BE CLEARED AS KASAMBO GUIDES SHIFT TO NEW MARKET FACILITY

Mpongwe West Member of Parliament Emmanuel Kasambo has directed traders at the local market to vacate makeshift outdoor stalls and immediately relocate into the main market shelter.
Mr. Kasambo issued the directive following a site tour of the facility, where he expressed concern over finding traders selling goods on temporary tables outside while the newly constructed shelter remained largely vacant.
Traders welcomed the directive, agreeing to clear all makeshift structures from the surrounding area and move their operations indoors.
To improve hygiene and trading conditions, Mr. Kasambo announced plans to pave the market grounds to prevent dust from contaminating food products. He further tasked the market management committee to remain vigilant and enforce compliance among all traders.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA APPOINTS FOUR CABINET MINISTERS
President Hakainde Hichilema has called on newly sworn-in Cabinet Ministers to prioritize national interest over personal ambition, demanding strict integrity, prudent resource management, and tangible results for the Zambian people.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of four Cabinet Ministers at State House, President Hichilema emphasized that public office is a position of trust that demands humility, collective responsibility, and zero tolerance for wastage.
Those sworn-in include Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, SC, as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Hon. Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, MP, as Minister of Finance and National Planning; Hon. Dr. Gilbert C.M. Chama, MP, as Minister of Green Economy and Environment; and Hon. Professor Roma Chilengi, MP, as Minister of Health.
President Hichilema directed the new Ministers to focus heavily on project ex*****on, instructing them to dedicate 60 percent of their operational time to monitoring and completing government initiatives.
The Head of State underscored that the 'Grow Zambia Agenda' remains central to the government's economic strategy, emphasizing that increased production and productivity across all sectors are required to generate revenue, build economic resilience, and create job opportunities.
He noted that enhanced national revenue is vital for sustaining key social programs, such as free education and social cash transfers, while supporting the country’s capacity to manage climate-related shocks.
Highlighting specific sectoral targets, President Hichilema directed the Ministry of Health to aggressively build domestic manufacturing capacity for pharmaceuticals to reduce reliance on foreign imports.
The President also urged citizens and media stakeholders to safeguard the country's investment climate by avoiding the spread of false information that could undermine investor confidence and stifle economic growth.
He reiterated that while citizens enjoy constitutional freedoms, all actions must strictly remain within the confines of the law to maintain national stability and foster development.
