This weeks’ TNR & Sterilisations:

Katie trapped a young female from Belvedere, luckily she didn’t show signs of having any kittens currently, she was spayed and returned home. Also with great help from a client in Mandara we trapped a big tom cat - unfortunately he had lost his left eye most likely from territorial fights - he was otherwise very healthy so was neutered and returned.

Lorna trapped a mum and her 3 kittens from a property in Highlands - Lorna had trapped here before TNR’ing 8 however the main mumma cat had evaded Lorna’s traps. We thought she had disappeared. Last week the client told us she was back and had 3 more kittens - luckily they were old enough to sterilise too and mumma cat was very protective of them - all 4 were easily trapped. Hopefully finally we have ended the cycle for this colony.

Lorna also TNR’d another mumma cat and her 3 kittens from a colony at Borrowdale racecourse. They are living very happily there and are very healthy - so that’s another cycle ended this week 💪🏻

Please if you see kittens - think about where mum cat is - it is vital we trap and spay her so she doesn’t have anymore litters - if you just try and catch the kittens you are not getting to the root cause of the problem - females can have up to 4 litters a year. Please help us end the cycle and improve the lives of community cats.

May was a tough month for our foster parents as unfortunately we lost 2 kittens to Feline Panleukopenia virus - aka Feline Parvo - despite a lot of hard work by their foster mum giving them supportive care day and night. There is only a 10-30% survival rate for kittens who contract Feline Parvo - lower of course if they are unvaccinated.

We also had to euthanise 2 kittens due to an unknown virus. They were uplifted from a very sick colony - they came in with very infected eyes and were also very malnourished. It was extremely hard for us to make that decision however it was deemed in their best interest as the kittens were not responding to any treatment and were slowly fading away.

There is some good news however, as 2 families adopted healthy happy kittens from us in May - both families adopting bonded pairs which was fantastic!

The 3 remaining kittens in our system at the end of May have since been adopted or been reserved for adoption.

🐾 Ideal for a farm, stables, workshop or office where they can continue doing what they do best

They have thrived outdoors and deserve a secure environment where they can stay together and be cared for.

This weeks’ TNR & Sterilisations:

Lorna got a report of kittens in a wood pile in Greendale, however upon setting traps to try and trap the mum cat, no kittens were seen. Lorna still set traps in the property and trapped a beautiful Tom cat. She tried again a second night and nothing was trapped so it seems mumma cat has moved her kittens. The client will let us know if she sees them again but at least the Tom was neutered and returned home. Lorna also TNR’d another Tom cat from Borrowdale.

Katie trapped a young family of 5 cats - a mumma cat, her 3 female kittens and a teenage male. Just imagine if we didn’t TNR this young family now - mum would have had another litter and her 3 female kittens all would’ve had their own litter in a matter of months - so potentially another 16 kittens born this year! Thank you to the client for calling us to stop the cycle before it got out of hand and also for looking after this family.

Katie also trapped a young female from Belvedere - she was pregnant but was successfully spayed. We also assisted 3 different owners sterilise their 3 females this week too.

9 females were spayed this week - preventing an average of 40 kittens from being born in the next few months - cats will reproduce quickly so the faster you act the better for you and the cats! If you feed them, you are providing a safe haven and the perfect environment for them to breed, call us asap so we can stop it before that happens and their numbers get out of control.

May’s Round Up:

As the months get colder inevitably our TNR work slows down, which is quite a relief for us after the busiest first few months of the year we have ever had.

We TNR’d cats from Colne Valley, Emerald Hill, Meyrick Park, Avondale, Highlands, Chisipite, Lewisam, Eastlea, Rolf Valley, Greendale, Mabelreign, Borrowdale, Hatfield, and Msasa. Our biggest colony in May was a colony of 11 from Eastlea.

We also assisted 4 owners sterilise their cats. As winter approaches breeding slows down, however it doesn’t stop completely. Please let us know if you are feeding stray or feral cats in your neighbourhood and let us stop the cycle before it gets out of hand. Thank you
