Something just shocked me. I have had the privilege of traveling to other African countries, especially in East Africa.

Countries like Kenya and Rwanda 🇷🇼 are some of the cleanest places I have ever visited. It’s rare to see a plastic bag on the ground in these countries. The cities are quite different from our country, Zimbabwe. Despite having an abundance of fruits like bananas throughout the year, you won’t see any peels on the ground in Kenya. Never! The same goes for Rwanda! 🇷🇼

Kenya has enacted a law that prohibits the manufacturing of plastic bags, which helps ensure that litter is not dumped carelessly. I believe Rwanda has a similar law. You rarely see any plastic bags littering the streets, except in designated disposal areas.

Regarding the streets & pavements, Nairobi has beautiful roads, as do Nakuru & Mombasa. In Nahururu, you won’t see the potholes that are common in Zimbabwe, especially along Kaguvi Street. The roads are well-maintained, with streetlights all over, making it clear that you are in town!

Why the difference?

Zimbabwe has a higher illiteracy rate than these countries. Because since the birth of ZIMSEC's pass rate on O-level exams has been below 30% , this then concludes to me that the number of illiterate people in town often exceeds the number of literate individuals. After this 70% of students who fail O level, they flood into places like market square, Copa cabana & other bus terminals to sell edible food and electronic products.

These individuals may be unaware or indifferent to proper waste disposal, which can lead to behavioral contagion, the tendency for people to quickly imitate careless behaviors, such as littering where others have already disposed of trash.

Psychologically speaking, people tend to act based on what is already established in their environment. For example, Social Norms Theory (Injunctive vs. Descriptive Norms) explains that people look to others for cues on how to behave. They are more likely to litter in an already dirty area (descriptive norm) or refrain from doing so if the community clearly expects cleanliness (injunctive norm).

This perspective then shifts some blame from individual citizens' reckless behavior to the responsibility of officials. Does the city council have enough waste disposal facilities, like trash bins, in town ?

Is there a law enforcement department that ensures those caught littering are punished? Not to put them in prison, not to beat them up!! For example, could someone be required to clean the street they littered on? Eg Kaguvi street( you are caught at Kaguvi and Robert Mugabe street) you should clean that street from J Moyo and Kaguvi to where Kaguvi streets meets with Charter.

Why can't we have an open conversation about banning the production of plastic bags altogether to improve our city’s hygiene standards?

The streets are full of potholes , why not adopt a pavement system to make our roads smoother and reduce potholes that collect water during the rainy season?

Zimbabwe should also consider developing a solar-powered lighting system instead of relying solely on electric lights, which are costly. This would help maintain better lighting in our cities.

Zimbabwe has over 17 official universities that produce more than 25,000 graduates every year. We should invest in improving our infrastructure by adopting the latest technology and aligning with current trends. Let’s learn from our neighboring countries, how are they managing these issues?
