There was a secret spy school on the lakeshore between Whitby and Oshawa.
It was called Special Training School 103. Everyone who knew about it — and
almost nobody did — called it Camp X. It opened in December 1941, it was run by
British intelligence, and more than five hundred agents trained there before
being sent behind enemy lines in occupied Europe.
It was secret enough that Mackenzie King, the Prime Minister of Canada, was
never told what actually went on there.
Today there is nothing left. Every building was torn down. There is a memorial,
put up in 1984, and a stretch of grass running down to the lake. Thousands of
people drive past it every day.
This is part one of three. Part two is about what the GM plant in Oshawa was
really building during the war, and part three is about how all of it created
the region we live in now.
