The Canadian Jewish Law Association is deeply disturbed by the shooting at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville while members of the Jewish community were gathered to observe Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.
We are very concerned for the health of the Belleville police officer who was stationed at the synagogue and was critically injured in the shootout with the assailant. Our thoughts are with the officer, his family, and the Belleville police service. We are grateful for this officer’s courage and dedication to protecting the community.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation and must be determined on the evidence. What does not require investigation is the legal principle at stake. Freedom of conscience, religion, and equality before and under the law are fundamental constitutional guarantees in Canada. The ability to enter a place of worship, attend religious services and participate openly in Jewish communal life without violence or intimidation goes to the heart of those protections.
The rule of law requires more than recognition of rights in principle. It requires that Canadians be able to exercise those rights in practice, and that violence or threats directed at religious communities be investigated seriously and addressed through the full application of Canadian law. This includes our local governments, provincial government, and federal government to act with determination to address the dramatic rise in antisemitism over the past three years and the need to combat it.
